I told him that a lot
of women, women that I knew, didn’t want to be soap-opera addicts and wanted a
lot more than the drudge of dishwater and diapers. It was something that my
husband and I had talked about for many years and I’m very lucky to be married
to a man that not only listens but doesn’t try to escape the conversation. Over the last several years I’ve seen the
talents of many hard-working, smarter-than-most, good-looking ladies, young and
older, deteriorate into the great housewife’s social pattern.
Sympathetically our
company NDITC started working on very special small business programs for women
because they had so much talent, many skills and a lot of energy that and their
capacities were never brought to the marketplace. My husband as a professional fortune 500
consultant within the inkjet and laser toner printer, copier, fax and point of
sale (cash register) cartridge business always did stimulating work but the “lipstick
project” left him searching for a better idea.
His research proved
the points that we had been talking about for several years. The American
middle class housewife had a good life but, she was being grievously wronged at
times due to social patterns or expectations of family, friends and even the
community she lived in. He also discovered
that the majority of middle class women were also looking for a lot more than
puckered up diamond covered hands due to dishwater and they didn’t have too
many choices.
A great deal of women
needed more income for their families but they were cut off from any
stimulating work because of young children, school schedules, buying groceries
and running the family household.
My husband agreed to
develop a small business neighborhood plan just for women that could help bring
back those pre-marriage talents and skills that were seemingly crushed by
children, housework, cooking and cleaning and all the domestic routine things
in life.
The research and
development took about a year and a half but he discovered many things about
women in or out of the workplace. Many
women, married or single, were bored and felt trapped in their life. They were
having trouble escaping routines, lower paying jobs and they didn’t want to
learn French or make ceramics.
We interviewed and
communicated with hundreds of working women, stay-at-home moms, professional
career women and many of these women were drowning in college debt, marriage
commitments, home mortgages, automobile payments, credit card debts, taking
care of children and some of them drank too much. We spoke to a mother of four
children and she said her life was dull and she couldn’t work because of the
high cost of child care but the family needed extra money. He husband in Philadelphia had been laid-off
even though he had the makings of a brilliant career in middle management.
In fact this same lady
had started her own small business with AVON with her mother-in-law and did
everything recommended for several months and earned only a few dozen dollars a
week. With her duties as a wife and
mother she had very few cash earning opportunities to help her family. As the months of her husband’s unemployment
ran out she signed up and registered for SNAP food stamps and other welfare
programs and she even signed up for marriage counseling because the stress of
no income, more bills and four children was crushing the family.
The situation that I
describe to you is typical. Families are
in trouble, incomes are very low or gone forever, mortgage payments are behind,
unemployment is running out or gone.
This family of nine years did all the right things and lived in the
suburban Philadelphia home that they took great pride in and always kept it in
great shape. With four children all under eight years old and running out of
money they could very easily become homeless.
My husband’s research
also discovered some very concerning things that the experts didn’t follow up
on very well. The majority of
non-college educated women, almost 90% of them, didn’t have any pre-marriage
vocational or complicated job skills.
Yes, they were talented people but it was all trial and error, cut and
fit and just hope for the best.
Most of the women had
their share of dates, premarital sex, children and used cars and at best had
about two years of college. In summary, most women were very loving, hard
working and caring people but in all reality didn’t have a chance in the
marketplace and would be earning minimum wage forever. These women had to find a way out of their
domestic poverty and luckily my husband discovered and put the pieces together
for a home based, working mother, single mother, and single woman business
plan. The plans have been within the NDITC research and development but several
months ago moved into the testing phase.
The truth is that this lady-based-small business plan works and to my
astonishment was designed to include the children of the client. These women and their children have an
immeasurable capacity for love and doing things together. These women don’t have to escape they have to
engage the adventure. They need to
regain their individuality even if that may sound ridiculous. The middle class women of today must start
using their intelligence, socially engage their neighbors, civically get
involved with life and that’s probably only the beginning.
The program “Career-Girl”
is the spearhead to larger and more complex plans but the multi-faceted small
business plan is the solution many women have been looking for to solve their
income problems.
There is a real good
chance of personal growth, higher income and it’s easy, fun and exciting. NDITC doesn’t believe in drudgery but the
many months of work have been completed, it’s time to end these family
problems.
